Potential Sound Events - 2004
BACK

Materials: various

This was a series of interpenetrations of simple sound interventions that I placed in various public spaces and locations in central Madrid. The work was exploring notions of the potentiality of events and uncertainty. Simple devices and situations were created in, to which actions by the publics' participation could cause sound events. I placed these in various locations and left them, not returning to the scene or watching what happened. This set up a situation in which after the initial placement of the device the possibility of all these events occurring existed, but their actual outcome was to be kept unknown to me.

25,000 Potential Events
During the early hours I placed and gaffer-taped to the floor outside the entrance of FNac a large section of bubble-wrap. People entering the shop could cause sound events by stepping on and bursting each bubble. Location FNac.

100 Potential Sound Events
A simple contraption consisted of a small bucket of water suspended from a wooden frame, and a 100 smooth round stones placed in a pile about 10 feet away from the structure. Location: Retiro Park.

50 Potential Sound Events
A small hole was dug, lined with plastic and filled with water. 50 pebbles were placed in concentric circles around the hole. Location: Retiro Park.
