Cellular Grid Machine was made as Software Application Art, with a by- product of it being able to produce throw-away music as the consequence of arbitary machine like mechanisms. I wanted to create software mechanism that did not have find worth and value only when used as a tool for some task or realising some compositional goal. CGM was concieved as the final work and what it was used for is of secondary importance to me. I was interested in questioning the use function of software and its role as tool, that only had significance when being controlled by a person.

It is a virtual machine that just-so-happens-to spit out music from its auto mutating 16x16 multi-directional grid. CGM can generate hours / weeks / months / years of continual, self-modifying and self-evolving forms that are created by processes which are arbitary, stupid, pointless and non-musical ... and it doesn’t care if anybody is around to listen to it. It's processes were inspired by its grid and not by musical ideas. Its user-interface was designed not with ‘user friendlyness’ in mind, but as an expression of the machine. The dials and controls are its stage and the sounds, the things moving and flashing are its theatrical kinetic art. CGM is music-software for the sake of music-software.

Its a bit of an old program and is a bit clunky in some aspects (one day I will do a complete OSX rewrite).

This program ran 'solo' for a generative music performance at the Zeppelin Festival at the CCCB, Barcelona in 2003.
