The Acid Piest installation was a full size confession booth in which people could enter and confess their sins to the virtual acid priest machine. To use the booth money had to be first inserted into a coin slot and afterwards the session would begin with some introductory church organ music. People would kneel on a wooden stool, in the dark, looking at a computer monitor. A keyboard was placed to communicate and the speakers were hidden. The priest’s head would be rocking back and forth and when the music finished would open its eyes and talk. It asked people: "tell me your sin". People would be prompted to type in their sins using the keyboard. After each sin was typed, the priest would speak out a reply, based on the sin. After 3 sins had been confessed, the priest would go into the acid priest from hell mode. It would start rocking slowly at first, loud sound would thunder and the screen would break into colours, speeding up until it would go into full acid trip mode, that was flying through a psychedelic tunnel with disorientating layers of blasting loud techno music. Then, the screen faded to blood red and a printout of the penance would be pushed through a little slot so to be taken away. In this work I was bettering the other confession booths around at the time, mine had people screaming in fear!!
